About Us
The Eating Stone Organisation became the life work of Cyprian Lumumba, who himself was an orphan from Tanzania since the age of five. He was taken into a Catholic orphanage in Mwanza, Tanzania by his foster father, Martin Lumumba; who enabled him to attend school and train as a nurse and clinical assistant.
Martin’s last dying wish was that Cyprian should found an orphanage of his own. Cyprian took this to heart and in 2008 he founded the “Eating Stone Organisation” in the slum regions of Nairobi. He began by renting a house with a compound for thirty-five children. Today, the facility has 85 children.
About our name
The name Eating Stone comes from a story Martin Lumumba told Cyprian when he was a small child. In the hardest times, mothers would set a pot of water and stones over the fire. Not because it would ever become a meal, but so the children would believe food was on its way and fall asleep before they noticed. What grew from this sad story was Cyprian’s vision to help the poorest of the poor – the street children and orphans of Nairobi.
We are family.
Eating Stone is an orphanage in Kikuyu, Nairobi. We are not an institution but a family of volunteers who work without a salary and live together as brothers and sisters. Our team of five live together with the children on the compound. The older children take responsibility for the younger ones. As in any large family, the older children help with the needs of the younger and the younger learn by and by to stand on their own feet.

Dr. Cyprian Lumumba
Founder & Director
Cyprian manages the daily operations and future direction of the institution. He is fundraiser and advocate for children welfare. A physician from Tanzania, Cyprian founded Eating Stone for children who have lost their families. Working with local child-welfare authorities, he has built a home where the most vulnerable are taken in, raised, and given a place to belong.
Florian Kreuzer
Fundraising Coordinator
Florian is a primary school teacher from Bavaria. In 2008 he lived at Eating Stone for two months, and the project has not let go of him since. He is the bridge between Nairobi and supporters abroad.
Agnes Atieno
Accountant
Agnes is a volunteer lady who has working with us and helping the kids in a great way. She joined Eating Stone in 2008 after the post election violence in Kenya. She lost everything including her belongings. She is responsible for day-to-day finances: Recording and allocating funds to where they are needed most and making sure rent and school fees are being paid.
Evans Ayako
Headteacher of Wisdom Academy
Evans is a teacher by profession holding a diploma in mathematics. He is managing daily operations to ensure a productive learning atmosphere where each child can thrive. Furthermore, he is fostering a collaborative working environment for all. Evans also ensures that the curriculum is effectively implemented and meets national standards.
Ronny Ochieng
Secretary
Alongside his diploma studies in Clinical Medicine and Surgery at St. Paul's University Nairobi, Ronny maintains records on the care of the children and their access to social welfare and support services.
Maureen
Cook
Maureen joined Eating Stone in 2008 after her family was killed in the post-election violence in Kibera. She came to volunteer and since then Eating Stone is her home. Maureen is cooking for the Eating Stone family. She is also a nurse and takes care of the storage.
